Board Member Responsibilities

By Esther L. Holcomb

Candidate for Member; Alameda County Board of Education; Trustee Area 4

This information is provided by the candidate
We should demand the best from ourselves.
We should take advantage of all the training that is available at no cost or low cost. EdSource has excellent training for public and private citizens to explain financial school accounting practices. California School Boards Association has many training classes that include finances for schools, leadership for board members, and many diverse subjects. I have participated in all of these classes and have paid for some of them personally so that I could understand what I needed to for my positions. We should not make excuses for ourselves if we are demanding that our students excel in their studies in order to pass the state exit exam. 64% of the graduating students today will need to be trained as information and technology workers because at least 25% of them will be totally dependent on technology by 2025. Shouldn't we aim at reaching the at-risk students with life-long learning skills NOW?
