I offer in my campaign what I call five smooth stones or five simple ideas.

Life. I support a comprehensive and consistent ethic of life. I endorse a reverence for human life and dignity from conception until natural death. If we are to argue for the rights of the unborn, we must vigorously support any public program that has the effect of reducing abortions. I further believe that any true position in affirmation of life must extend beyond birth. All issues of life and death, such as, capital punishment, euthanasia, hunger, poverty and war, must be viewed in the context of this ethic of life. It is impossible to argue that policies that protect the unborn are within the scope of government, but policies that encourage and empower the choice for life are outside of the government's responsibility.

Family. I support family, community, and participation in society. Creating good jobs, reforming health care, improving education, and standing up for the great American middle class is the best way to promote strong and healthy families.

Justice. I support the needs of the poor, oppressed and exploited. I will work to meet the demands for social justice. I will work with other Democrats to ensure options for the poor and vulnerable. I will protect the dignity of work and the rights of workers.

Responsibility. With America's freedoms come duties. Rights must be balanced by responsibility. Our inalienable right to the pursuit of happiness must be balanced by our duty and responsibility to our fellow man and to the care of God's creations.

Security. I will work for the security of America and to spread democracy and peace to the planet beyond our borders. In solidarity with peoples and nations of good will, America can move past the fear that stains our current attitudes toward the world.
