1. What are your Qualifications for Office? (50 word limit)

Answer from Tyrone K. Yates:

I am an incumbent Member of the House of Representatives serving on the Committee on Ways and Means, Finance and Appropriations, Criminal Justice, and Agriculture and Natural Resources. Assigned to the special Study Committee pursuing SB185 in the area of mortgage lending reform. Previous long-term service on Cincinnati City Council from 1990-1999 with two terms as Vice-Mayor of Cincinnati. B.A. , J.D.

2. What plans do you have to address your top three priorities? (100 word limit)

Answer from Tyrone K. Yates:

With each increasing term in the House of Representatives, many more opportunities are presented to impact state laws. Even though not a Member of the House Committee on Financial Institutions, I was appointed to serve on the special study committee that wrote the House version of SB 185-designed to reform mortgage lending practices in Ohio-as Ohio leads the nation in home foreclosures. Regarding educational reform, as a Member of the Committees on Ways and Means and Finance and Appropriations, I will continue to give my voice and votes to higher appropriations for public education and Higher Education. Urban and surburban legislative district like the 33rd District desperately need targeted economic development policies and economic assistance from the Governor's cabinet to work to restore business and jobs throughout the 33rd District-stretching from Walnut Hills to Deer Park with Norwood and Pleasant Ridge and Golf Manor in-between.

3. What changes would you recommend for improving public oversight of charter schools? (150 word limit)

Answer from Tyrone K. Yates:

Charter schools are a silent time bomb of failure and inadequacy. The first step to be taken is to require notification to parents whenever the school, overall, fails to meet any of the testing achievement requirements. Charter schools should meet the same requirements as public schools for the range of studies and activities as public schools. Many Charter schools are operating as poorly performing.

4. Ohio has the highest foreclosure rate in the nation. What actions would you support at the state level to address this crisis? (150 word limit)

Answer from Tyrone K. Yates:

Pass the strongest predatory lending bill in the nation. Make mortgage brokers, appraisers, and lenders comply with the Consumer Sales Practices Act.

5. Both parties have called for redistricting reform. What three top criteria should be used in redrawing legislative districts? (150 word limit)

Answer from Tyrone K. Yates:

1. One person, one vote.
2. Contiguous boundaries.
3. Constitutional representation pursuant to the Voting Rights Act.
