Disaster Preparedness for the City of Santa Clarita

By Dwight P. McDonald

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Santa Clarita

This information is provided by the candidate
The City of Santa Clarita is in a location which, in the event of a major Earthquake, Firestorm, or Natural or Human Disaster, could become an isolated community for a period of time. There needs to be a plan to provide for the health and safety of the people until normal is restored.
The City of Santa Clarita is but a heartbeat away from being a nearly isolated community, given the right conditions. Whether it is a natural disaster, or human induced, this city needs to have a plan to deal with those issues which will be affecting every resident of the city. The City needs to have a plan for public safety, possible evacuation, transportation movement, and restoration of water, power, and gas. Additionally food, shelter, gasoline, refuse, and waste issues need to be addressed to sustain the city until normality is restored, and people can start to rebuild.

The City needs to establish a plan by which safety of life and property are paramount, coupled with the restoration of services and utilities. The plan is not one to be a fix, but a sustaining of the basic needs until the re-establishment of normal operations. The City is the house, and the people are the family. When disater strikes, you care for the family, you provide security, shelter, food, clothing and assurance. When the family is safe, secure, and thier needs are met, rebuilding the house begins.
