Born in Houghton, Michigan, I received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Michigan, attended graduate school at John Hopkins University and the University of California, Irvine. I also received a Doctor of Laws from Western State University. I am married to former Long Beach Mayor Ernie Kell and we have two adult children. In 1998 I retired from Millikan High School after teaching in the LBUSD for 24 years.

I was first elected to represent the Fifth Council District in 1998, re-elected in 2002 and chosen by the fellow Councilmembers to serve as Vice Mayor in 2004. I am currently running for re-election to the City Council as a write-in candidate as allowed by section 214 of the Long Beach City Charter.

I am a proud member or sustaining member of many Long Beach organizations. These include the American Association of University Women, American Heart Association, Campfire USA, Children's Benefit League, Long Beach K-9 Officers Association, Downtown Lions Club, El Dorado Woman's Club, Long Beach Art Museum, Museum of Latin American Art, Stand for Children- L.B. Chapter, Wall Street Investment Club, member of the Board of Directors of the Golden State Humane Society, and sponsor and Honorary Board Member of the Long Beach Women's Health Summit.
