ED BARWICK'S STORY

DEEP ROOTS IN THE 5TH DISTRICT Coming to Long Beach with his family in 1950, Ed attended Long Beach public schools. As a senior, Ed answered his nation's call ,and enlisted in the United States Navy, serving for seven years on a nuclear submarine at the height of the Cold War. During his time in the Navy, he married his wife, Bonnie, who he met while they played for the Long Beach Junior Concert Band. Ed and Bonnie have been married for over forty years.

SUPPORTING A LONG BEACH FAMILY Ed and Bonnie returned to Long Beach with their children in 1969, and soon moved into the East Long Beach neighborhood that now makes up part of the Fifth District. As Ed and Bonnie began to raise a family, Ed attended Long Beach City College and worked at Douglas Aircraft and the Long Beach Naval Shipyard to make ends meet. Ed soon went on to earn his Bachelor and Master Degrees in Economics from Cal State Long Beach.

SERVING HIS NATION In 1973, Ed answered his nation's call again and began his twenty-five year career for the U.S. Customs Service. While with Customs, Ed worked as a manager in narcotics enforcement, contracting, border station design and telecommunications for the western U.S., as well as Assistant Director for Administration in Los Angeles. Ed worked to manage and balance multi-million dollar budgets, in addition to supervising a staff of hundreds. He was called to Egypt in 1990, and then two years later to Trinidad and Tobago, where he assisted the Ministers of Finance in restructuring their airport and revenue collections operations. The reform program that Ed established in Trinidad and Tobago still exists today, saving their government millions of dollars every year.

WORKING FOR HIS COMMUNITY Ed retired in 1998, and continues to this day to be active in the community. He sits on the Board of Directors for the Downtown Lions Club, recently served on Mayor Beverly O'Neill's Ethics Review Task Force that set ethical guidelines for the city of Long Beach, and served on the Greater Long Beach Boy Scouts Golf committee for several years. Ed and Bonnie have three children and two grandchildren, and enjoy traveling and playing golf.
