Are we preparing our children for the global economy?

By Muhit Rahman

Candidate for Board Member; Indian Hill City School District

"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire" - W. B. Yeats
"Imagination is more important than knowledge" said Einstein and I find myself nodding in agreement. He doesn't say that knowledge is unimportant. Just that imagination counts more. The Irish poet W.B. Yeats said it a bit differently when he said that education is not about filling a bucket but about lighting a fire. He too, was saying the same thing.

How are we preparing our children? Are we preparing them to think or are we just stuffing them full of information? Are we teaching them to never stop asking questions and always push the limits or are we bequeathing them with our own limited view of the universe? How much help will four years of Latin be when business around them is conducted in Mandarin and/or Hindi? These are important questions to consider as the world changes ever so more rapidly. The world that our children are going to enter is utterly different from the one that we had encountered. Are they going to be ready?

We must have the vision - the foresight. We must think of the world as it is going to be and make sure our children are ready for it. We have the resources and our children are certainly smart enough. But we have to show them the way.

I believe that we can show them the way. And we must dare to be great. We owe our children nothing less.
