Kendal Coes was born the second of four children to Cecil and Dorothy Coes on September 27, 1967 in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1972 the family moved to Silverton, Ohio where he lived until 1991.

Kendal attended elementary school and Junior High school at the German English Bilingual Alternative School and studied the German language for twelve years. He graduated from Withrow High School in 1985, where he was 14th among 465 students.

In 1990, Kendal graduated from Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama with a Bachelor's of Arts Degree in History and a minor in Political Science. In 1993 he graduated from The Ohio State University College of Law with a Juris Doctor Degree.

While in Law School, Kendal worked as a Law Clerk at the Ohio State Public Defender's Office. After graduating from Law School, Kendal worked fort he Private Complaint Mediation Program. Kendal also worked as an Assistant City Prosecutor from 1994-1998. From 1998 until 2005 he served as a Magistrate in the Hamilton County Domestic Relations Court. In 2002, he was promoted to Lead Contempt Magistrate, supervising other Magistrates. In February 2005 he was appointed to an unexpired term to replace Judge Karla Grady, where he is currently still serving as a Judge in the Hamilton County Municipal Court. Judge Coes is proud of the fact that he has never missed a day of work in all of his years as an attorney. He has also received, via performance evaluations as a Magistrate, an excellent rating in every single category for five straight years.

Judge Coes is the Chairman of the Domestic Violence Coordinating Council in Hamilton County. He is a Board Member of the DuBois Academy Charter School which serves underprivileged children in the Over-the-Rhine area of Cincinnati. The DuBois Academy was the only other Cincinnati school besides Walnut Hills High School to achieve an excellent rating. He is also member of the Black Lawyers Association of Cincinnati. Further, he sits on the alumni Board of Directors of Withrow High School. He is also a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

Kendal has been married to his wife Diana for 11 years. They have one son named Andrew.
