A Vision for Burlingame

By Ann Keighran

Candidate for Council Member; City of Burlingame; 4 Year Term

This information is provided by the candidate
We must define a vision for Burlingame and begin execution of that vision to make our city livable today and also build a place we'll want our kids to live in one, five, ten, and fifty years from now.
CHALLENGES FACING BURLINGAME TODAY
- Commercial Areas: Both Downtown and Broadway are challenged by a large number of vacant storefronts and a dwindling variety of business types.
- Entertainment options: Burlingame has few real entertainment options, so residents are forced to drive to other cities to enjoy a movie, to hear live music, or even to grab an ice-cream after dinner.
- Safeway: A new Safeway has been stalled for nearly 8 years.
- Housing: A lack of housing options is directly impacting the ability of seniors, business owners, teachers, firefighters, police, new families, empty nesters, and your children to live in Burlingame.
- Encroaching developers: Developers are approaching the city with their vision for Burlingame. These developers envision building drive-through outlets and big box stores in the city whithout consideration of what's best for Burlingame.

MY VISION AND PLAN FOR THE FUTURE
- Burlingame Avenue area: I will lead the effort to define a Specific Plan for the Burlingame Avenue district utilizing community input and incoporating best practices from other cities. I will explore entertainment options appropriate to Burlingame's scale, such as a small movie theater, more mid-scale and family restaurant options, and a small music venue such as the Little Fox Theater. I will solicit developers to build venues that attract more people and help to make our downtown more vibrant.
- Broadway: I will define a cohesive vision for Broadway with merchant and resident input. I will work with agencies to define a transportation corridor that includes Caltrain, high speed rail, and a 101 transition that will further support the Broadway area.
- Safeway: The Burlingame Avenue area specific plan needs to include a solution for Safeway that is agreeable to both Safeway and residents. This project needs to be done right and done now.
- Housing: I will promote the ANN Plan as part of Specific Plans, "Active Nearby Neighborhood," looking at solutions that offer various housing types very close to retail and other services + solutions that are desired today by seniors, empty-nesters, and new families.
- Design Review Process: The design of houses built in our city has improved substantially since our residential design review process was implemented over 7 years ago. In that period I have reviewed over 500 projects, ensuring that homes fit with the character of Burlingame. Equally important is the need to consider design review for commercial properties to ensure that all projects enhance the charm and character of our city.

Now is the time to define a vision for Burlingame, so that we as residents and business owners can shape the future of our city. I will help drive that vision, engaging with residents and business owners to hear what you want our town to be now and into the future. I will help carry out the execution of that vision, ensuring that Burlingame continues to be a vibrant, dynamic town, attracting new residents, businesses, and visitors based on its character, charm, great diversity of stores, restaurants, entertainment options, housing choices, and easy access to public transit.
