A city council by design is a body of individuals who meet to deliberate on various issues and give direction to the professional staff of the city government. I have attended many council meetings over the years and I have found this partcular council to be deficient in the area of open and meaningful debate on the issues of the day. At times it would seem that decisions have been predetermined prior to the actual council meeting. Subcommittees of two councilpersons meeting privately with the city staff is not conducive to open and accountable representative government. If elected, I will endeavor to rekindle open debate on the city council during regularly scheduled public meetings.
