I was born and raised in and near Detroit, Michigan. I attended the University of Michigan receiving a BS Degree in Geology. After serving in the U. S. Army for two years I returned to Michigan and earned a MA Degree in Education. My first teaching job was teaching Junior High School in Richmond, California. In 1960 I received a grant from the National Science Foundation to study mathematics at Syracuse University. I was awarded a MA in mathematics in 1961 and returned to California to teach in the Acalanes School District. When Palo Alto Unified School District opened Gunn High School I took a job in Palo Alto. Jean and I purchased a house on Orange Ave. in Los Altos.
Our two children went to school at Hillview School and Bullis School and Covington and Egan. We were very active in working with the Citizens Caucus to elect members to the School Board. We settled into an active life in Los Altos. Jean was a driving force behind an Exploratorium Day at Hillview School and led classroom art projects at Bullis. She served on the Los Altos Park and Recreation Commission. I was a member of the first Los Altos Bicycle Committee which developed a bicycle lane on San Antonio and ultimately opened Foothill Expressway to bicycles. To this day I am an avid recreational cyclists. I coached and was a referee for the local American Youth Soccer Organization.
I took a leave from Gunn and took a job at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia in their teacher training program supervising student teachers. Shortly thereafter we moved to our present residence on Robleda Rd. in Los Altos Hills. I served on the Site Counsel at Los Altos High School working to improve the program in mathematics and science. Wishing to make a contribution to our Town, Jean was a member of the Pathway Committee, the Environmental Design Committee and was a Planning Commissioner. I became Chairman of the Los Altos Hills Finance Committee and later became Treasurer of the Friends of the Library. Most recently I have volunteered time for the construction and maintenance of the California Native Plant Society Nursery at Hidden Villa and have led cycling tours in the Sierras. Desiring to continue serving the community, I have decided to run for the Los Altos Elementary District School Board. I believe my experience in education and in the community makes me a good candidate for this position.
