A Vibrant Downtown

By Annan Paterson

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Novato

This information is provided by the candidate
I will work with the community to develop a thriving civic center, providing leadership to get the job done.
I commend the work done thus far to revitalize our downtown. The Grant Avenue improvements are almost complete. Businesses are involved in activities and programs that bring residents and visitors downtown. The arrival of Sweet Potatoes, Trader Joe's, and Whole Foods are welcome additions to develop a more vibrant shopping and community center.

As a city councilmember, I will bring my experience as an innovator, collaborator and problem solver to keep the revitalization moving forward to benefit all of Novato. I will work with the community to determine next steps in the development of a thriving civic center, and then provide leadership to see it through.

As Councilmember, my plans include:

  • Informing and engaging the community (via website, newsletter, town hall meetings, Novato Public Access Television) regarding revitalization process and needed resources;

  • Determining the wishes of the voters regarding City facilities through the use of our focus group results and community survey (approved by City Council June 2005);

  • Exploring the possibility of a "Downtown Park" to include elements of public art and flowering plants;

  • Supporting the preservation of our historic district and a film center at the Novato Theater via private/public partnerships;

  • Solidifying plans to bring a full service bookstore to Novato, complimenting the two used bookstores already present in our downtown;

  • Organizing the city's resources to streamline the current processes to provide better services.
