Accountability and Dedication

I am asking for your vote to the SUHS Board of Trustees on November 8, 2005. My husband Randall and I reside in northeast Salinas with our sons, who attend public schools. I have been active in the community supporting libraries and local schools; advocating for new teachers in order to reduce class size. I support the efforts of the Parent Teacher Clubs, Boosters and the Sports Task Force. By working together with the City of Salinas, Salinas Police Dept., Alisal School District and parents through the Bully Task Force, I advocated for active parent patrols at all Alisal schools. My memberships include Alisal School District Blue Ribbon Committee, Steinbeck School Site Council, Save Salinas Libraries, Partners for Peace, Salinas Reads program and Salinas Valley Leadership Alumni.

Due to growth our schools are near or at capacity. We must reduce class size. In the last two years the SUHS District has failed to meet the revised standards that have been set forth by the State of California in language arts and math. While our scores have improved, we must do better, by addressing issues of improved student achievement and ensure that each and every student passes the California High School Exit Exam necessary for graduation. "We must provide students with expanded services and quality instruction. Without quality education their future remains uncertain."

If elected to the High School Board you can count on my full participation, dedication and commitment to the schools, because a 40% absence rate from the board meetings is unacceptable, I am committed to giving my full attention to the needs of the district. I will attend the meetings. I will listen to your concerns and encourage the participation of all parents, students and staff. It's time to bring civility back to the board. As a parent and an advocate of education, I am asking for your vote in order to achieve these goals.

I sincerely appreciate your vote,

Margaret Serna-Bonetti
