MPC is dear to my heart and I will do my utmost to preserve present programs and secure positions and benefits for all employees

By Kathrina M Ognyanovich

Candidate for Board Member; Monterey Peninsula Community College District

This information is provided by the candidate
I have been associated with MPC since 1975. I was a part-time instructor and a member of the team that initiated Ethnic Studies Program and EOPS.
Dear Friends:

I am a resident of Monterey and active participant in our local communities since 1974.

With your help and support I had the pleasure of serving you as a MPC Trustee from 1997 to 2001. And I thank you for your support and your trust.

As a Trustee I had a record of successfully working on budget matters and fighting for many issues that benefited educational programs, the students and the employees.

Constituency must be served at its best! In this spirit, I have always managed to maintain accountability for your concerns and sound fiscal management. Such my action and attitude prompted some members to "label" me as " a difficult person to work with". I am not a "difficult person". I am a hard working member who happened to honor my promises to all voters and work on the issues and concerns you, as the voters, shared with me during the campaign. This is the only right and ethical way to do!

I am asking for your help again and your vote to ensure that the Board concentrates on important issues and reflects the diversity. I believe it is time for a woman to join the all gentlemen's board.

This November 8, please make diversity on the Board a reality and ELECT me once again.

As always, I am very thankful for your support and your vote. And as always, I will truly represent you and work on ALL your concerns.

There are so many important issues to work on. I assure you I will again be your effective representative. Together we'll make a difference. I am qualified and experienced to tackle the following and many other issues:

  • Trustee area reorganization:

As a Board President of MPUSD Board of Education I initiated the reorganization of trustee areas and was a working member of the team. The process is a lengthy one that requires background and training in such matters. I do have both!

Reorganizing trustee areas would give an opportunity for more local involvement. Many local residents would be able to run for the seat in a more financially affordable process. Presently the election is held "at large" which guarantees a victory to only a few who could afford to either self finance their campaigns or raise 10K-15K! Such political environment should not be part of education. Education should be affordable for ALL to attend as well as for ALL to participate in a democratic process and run for the seat on the Board.

  • Hiring of new President/Superintendent:

I have received a special training at CSBA and have participated in the search as well as in the hiring process of the Superintendent[MPUSD]. This particular training and experience will be very handy.

As MPUSD representative on the Joint Powers Board of the Community Services Project, I have also participated in the hiring of its Director. This is an additional valuable experience.

  • Fiscal Management:

I have a lengthy training and experience in educational budgets [$8 million to $96 million range].

  • Diversity:

During my studies in anthropology I learned about peoples and cultures in different countries. I understand the importance of keeping cultural heritage and having role models. I am an active member of many organizations that promote such unity.

  • Satellite Campus

My background in the computer science and my work as a software developer as well as online instructor [computer languages: Java / ULM] would be very helpful in decision making process.
