Richard C. Kreitman

Candidate for Carmel School Board 2005
Academic Excellence
Phone: 624-4977 E-mail: rkreitman@redshift.com

Family: Married to Barbara Kreitman. Two boys in Carmel schools: Nicholas, 7th grade Carmel Middle School; Aaron, 2nd grade, Carmel River School.

Education: Stuyvesant H.S., New York, 1966; Stanford University, BA, 1970, Economics and Latin American Studies; Cornell University, MA, 1974, Agricultural Economics.

Professional Experience: My first career was with the U.S. State Department as a Foreign Service Officer and economist with the U.S. Agency for International Development(USAID) in Costa Rica and Washington D.C. For the last 30 years or so I've been in the private sector, since 1997 working in partnership with my wife Barbara as a financial consultant and Certified Financial Planner with Smith Barney, lately in our firm's Salinas office. My entire professional career has involved management, finance, planning, and analysis, in small and large companies, public and private. I know what it takes to successfully set organizational goals and implement programs to achieve them. I am an excellent budget analyst and auditor, skills that will serve us well on the Carmel School Board.

Carmel Schools Experience: Since my sons began in the District four years ago I have been an active participant and volunteer in the Carmel Schools, serving on the River School PTA Board (currently Parliamentarian), the Middle School PTA Board (not currently), the FOCUS Foundation Board (currently Secretary), the River School Site Council, and several District committees concerned with academic improvement and performance. I have volunteered and tutored in the classroom and have been active in fundraising and events.

I have also attended nearly every public board meeting of the Carmel Unified School District for the past 3 years, observing, taking careful notes, participating in discussions, and usually remaining until the concluding gavel, however late. Often I have been the only independent observer at a meeting, everyone else either being a District employee or having business to transact with the District. As an active citizen participant at these meetings I have regularly presented the Board and administration with analyses of how our students are doing academically and how our academic performance measures up to our peers. As I have in the past, I continue to challenge the District and Board with questions and positions that are not always popular, but always attempt to understand the truth of our schools' situations without sugar-coating it. My goal of improving academics and learning for all students in the District has not changed.
