Prior to 2001, the City Council selected one of its members to serve as mayor, and that person served a one-year term of office. In 1999, the South EI Monte voters amended Section 2.16.060 of the Municipal Code to provide for a directly elected mayor with a two year term of office. There have been two regular elections since that amendment, and each time the voters have elected a mayor for a term of two years.

The City Council has placed Measure I on the ballot to allow the voters to decide. whether the two-year term of office for mayor should be extended to four years. If this measure is adopted, the term for mayor would be four years, and would coincide with the term of office of the other City Councilmembers. These changes would be effective at the next regular election following this election, which is currently scheduled for November of 2007.

A "yes" vote would approve the proposed ordinance amending the Municipal Code, so that the term of office for the elected mayor will be four years.

A "no" vote would reject the proposed ordinance and retain the two-year term of office for the elected mayor.

The above statement is an impartial analysis of Measure I.
