Less than twenty percent of adults who live in Humboldt County can afford to buy a home for their families. According to Newsweek magazine, Humboldt (and Del Norte) Counties are among the most "destitute" counties in the country. "The two counties, with a poverty rate of between 19.4 percent and 27.8 percent, have a collective poverty rate lower than all of Oregon."

To me, this poverty rate is unacceptable. We can take two courses of action: (1) do nothing and say "that's the way life is here", or (2) use the biggest economic asset we have - Humboldt Bay - to create living wage jobs here and get our economy rolling again.

Getting our economy back on its feet will help keep our children here and will help pay for creating more recreational opportunities along the Bay while maintaining the natural beauty of the Bay. Please return me to the Board of Commissioners of the Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District, and I'll help finish the job we started.
