Conservation

By Dennis G. Hunter

Candidate for Commissioner; Humboldt Bay Harbor Recreation and Conservation District; Division 4

This information is provided by the candidate
We're fortunate we can have it all: a thriving deep water port, a bay abundant with plants and wildlife, quiet serenity for those who seek it, and plenty of recreational activity on the water and around the Bay.
A large attraction to Humboldt Bay is its natural beauty. The Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District maintains a number of specific conservation programs including maintaining the most extensive bilge water recovery system on the west coast; implementing the first ballast water exchange program on the west coast of North America; managing several wildlife areas; participating in or coordinating many natural resource research projects; and, participating in or sponsoring numerous bay awareness educational events.

Today a significant area of the Bay has been protected and set aside for the over 250 species of birds that migrate here and thousands of acres are inhabited by a variety of animals including the marsh shrew, coast mole, river otter, gray fox, and black tailed deer. Protecting the natural beauty of the bay and its surrounding areas is one of our key responsibilities and one I take seriously. With years in the making, the Humboldt Bay Management Plan will become the guiding constitution of the Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District for years to come. It is now in its final stages with its completion scheduled sometime next year.
