Improve Student Achievement

By Robin Lyons

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Placerville Union School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Students should feel enthusiastic about learning.
How often do you hear an adult say, "If I only knew then what I know now"? I love learning, and use this saying about my school experience. If I knew how interesting learning was when I was a student, I would have paid more attention. I was not enthusiastic about school then, I am now.

School districts should look at how they can wake up the sleeping desire for knowledge in children. Children by nature are curious, often not so curious when in school. Why is that?

During these busy times children have more active lives away from school. This is a reality that should be incorporated into the "game plan" for educating our children. After school care in working parent homes, after school sports, etc. all factor into the student's academic success or failure.

Teachers need time to brainstorm and collaborate on new ways to inspire children. As children begin asking who, what, when, where, why, they naturally retain the answers because children are curious for more knowledge. We need to find the key to opening the door which will enable us to inspire children. When a child wakes up to start their day, they should be eager to go to school rather than dreading it. I believe test scores and student achievement will improve when children are enthusiastic and inspired to learn.
