What's That Smell? Politics

By David B. "Dave" Duggan

Candidate for Director to succeed Stan Gustafson if recalled; Los Osos Community Services District

Governance is a never ending battle. Nepotism can destroy a community. We need statesmen not politicians.
Politicians and appointed officials can be your worst enemy. Do not trust that they have the community's or your best interest at heart. By the time a person gets to a true position of governance you can be assured that they are indebted to someone and/or have a personal agenda. That is how a narrow constituency can run roughshod over a community.

As stated, I envisioned a greater regional answer to our problems. But there are those among us that have visions of grandeur and power. These individuals will try to win at any cost, even at the cost of Democracy.

I have questioned the fiduciary actions of certain elected officials, as to the delay of our election process. There is evidence of nepotism and worse as to the validity of the re-call process and the circumventing of election codes in the certification process. In the quest to win at any cost, others have denied us (our) rights to unhindered and unobstructed elections.

Furthermore, the use of public resources has allowed electioneering, with threats and misleading information, to be broadcast to our community in hopes of swaying the electorate, thus making these elections neither free nor fair.

Yet, in the finale analysis, I believe the electorate will see through these attempts to deny us unhindered, unobstructed, free and fair elections, and vote for a better future for Los Osos, Baywood Park and the country.

Just remember, democracy delayed is democracy denied. The sacrifices of those who serve, have served and the fallen, is made cheap by those who would win at any cost. The revelation, that some in this community and higher authority, would see this L.O.C.S.D. "crushed" has brought me and "others" to a realization that we have reprobates in places of governance, who would sacrifice (our) democracy for self and special interest. It has gone beyond "local politics" and threatens our very way of life.

Will those who would destroy our nation from without, be pleased that our own officials have threatened to bring down a "legally elected governing body"? Would they not be pleased that the rights to unhindered, unobstructed, free and fair elections have been denied American citizens? What will they say to those elected officials who would deny us our democracy? Would they get an "adda boy", a handshake or a pat on the back? No, they would kill them.

Remember, the more we are denied our rights, the weaker we make the country and the stronger our enemies become. Can you live with the thought that those who govern us would sacrifice the very institution that brought them into power? I cannot and I will not let it stand.

As President Bush has said, "You're either with us or against us." That holds true now more than ever. If you can't decide which side of the issues you stand on, then just look at what either side will do to win. I'm sure you will choose wisely.
