Abortion

By Peter A. Fossett

Candidate for United States Representative; District 2; Republican Party

This information is provided by the candidate
I believe regulation of abortion should be left to the states.
I think Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided; I do not believe there is a constitutional right to an abortion. I believe that regulation of abortion should be left to the states: states that wish to outlaw abortion after full discussion of the competing opinions should be allowed to; states that wish to keep abortion safe and legal after such discussion should be allowed to. Personally, I abhor the use of abortion as birth control. Instead of promoting the termination of inconvenient pregnancies, I think we need to educate our young men and women to make responsible choices with respect to secual behavior and to take responsibility for their actions. By creating a culture of respect and responsibility we can reduce the demand for abortion. That said, I also believe that responsible adults who wish to start a family but discover through medical testing that their developing fetus has significant mental or physical health issues that will interfere with the quality of life of the child or the parents should be able to choose to terminate their pregnancy. Republicans speak at great length about the right to life; we ought to speak more about the quality of life.
