Smart Voter Full Biography for Mary Sue Maurer

Candidate for
Council Member; City of Calabasas

This information is provided by the candidate

Mary Sue Maurer and her husband, Paul Villadolid, moved to Calabasas more than a decade ago to raise their three boys in a small town environment within a beautiful mountain setting. Mary Sue was attracted to the natural beauty of Calabasas and the community's wonderful public schools. She saw Calabasas as an ideal place to live, work and raise her family.

Professionally, Mary Sue's political and public policy career blossomed when she served as Deputy Press Secretary for California Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi in 1991. She then focused her attention on our local environment, where she worked in government affairs and public education for the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission. Mary Sue continued her environmental work during the mid-1990s as a consultant for PS Enterprises, an environmental and social issues firm, where she managed the city of Los Angeles' extensive storm water pollution prevention and education campaign, disseminating important pollution prevention information to manufacturers, business owners and homeowners.

In 2001, she became Field Deputy for Assemblymember Fran Pavley, serving as the Assemblymember's designee on the boards of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission. While serving on both entities, Mary Sue was dedicated to protecting the Santa Monica Mountains' unique ecosystems and addressed the pollution problems of the Santa Monica Bay. Mary Sue's versatile mix of political and environmental experience helped her learn the importance of active listening,, as well as valuable problem-solving techniques, to respond to complicated issues impacting our community.

Mary Sue currently manages the philanthropy programs for Blue Shield of California, one of the state's largest health care providers.

While working and raising her family, Mary Sue has been actively involved in the Calabasas community. When she discovered the State of California's declining school-nurse-to-student ratio, she actively worked with the Las Virgenes Unified School District to address the issue. Her hard work earned her an appointment to a district-wide Health Task Force. Mary Sue was also the co-founder of Middle School Now, a successful effort to build A.C. Stelle Middle School to alleviate overcrowding at A.E. Wright Middle School.

Mary Sue currently serves as a member of the Calabasas Education Commission, where strengthening cooperation between the City and the school district are her top priorities. Maurer is also the Vice President of the Greater Mulwood Homeowners Association. In addition, she launched and coordinated a popular "Walk to School" program for children in the Mulwood area, creating a safe environment for elementary and middle school children to walk and ride their bicycles to school.

Mary Sue graduated from Cal State Dominguez Hills with a degree in Journalism. Prior to her political career, she worked in marketing and public relations for The Disney Channel and Z Channel. In her spare time, Mary Sue is a volunteer parent with the Boy Scouts' Pack 333 and is an avid hiker, tennis player and a lover of travel.
