US Out of Iraq, Stop Attacks on Iran!

By Wendy Lyons

Candidate for Mayor; City of Los Angeles

This information is provided by the candidate
For immediate and unconditional withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. The people of Iran as well as other semicolonial countries have the right to develop nuclear power.
The war in Iraq is being waged by Washington to make Iraq safe for US investment. The US rulers will increasingly be pushed into wars to defend their economic interests against the interests of their imperialist rivals in other countries. President Bush's inauguration speech about spreading freedom around the world was about this--the freedom of his class to pillage the world for the profits of a tiny minority--the freedom to send working-class youth to kill and die for this.

Iran is a prime target right now. The US rulers have never forgiven the people there for overthrowing the brutal dictatorship of the shah, who acted as policeman for US business interests in the whole region. Washington has no moral right to accuse another country of the possibility of misusing nuclear power when the US is the only country that dropped the nuclear bomb on civilians, wiping out the two Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The Socialist Workers Party campaign backs the right of semicolonial countries to get the sources of energy they need, including nuclear energy, for economic development. Billions now live without electricity.
