Balancing the need for water

By James W. "Jim" Word

Candidate for Director; Casitas Municipal Water District; Division 2

This information is provided by the candidate
The proposed removal of Matilija Dam posses real challenges.
One of the most challenging aspects of serving on the Casitas Water Board is maintaining a balance between providing suffecient water for all customers' needs and protecting the environment. The projected removal of Matilija Dam posses a particular challenge as Casitas must find replacement water that is currently stored behind the dam. That water is currently used to supply a number of customers using approximately 700 acre feet of water per year.

I have been completly supportive of the Dam's removal thrughout the planning and discussion of the project. My and the Board's big concern has been that all of the identified problems and issues caused by its removal be addressed and mitigated. Casitas' customers should not be left to deal and pay for them.

I, along with other Board members are continuing to work with the project managers, (County of Ventura and the Army Core of Engineers)to find salutions to the problems. Again, Casitas' customers should not have to pay for the unmitigated costs of Matilija Dam removal.

We must do everything we can to protect the endangered Steelhead Trout and at the same time continue to provide the water Casitas' customers depend upon to supply thier domestic and agricultural needs.
