The Libertarian political philosophy is the Jeffersonian principle that the government that governs least, governs best. As it is, elections are, in the words of Mark Twain, "advance sales on stollen goods." Everyone wants their "benefits," but such "benefits" are becoming a negative return on what people will pay and, worse, excessive taxation draws off the capital that is necessary for economic growth and a better life. American political discourse is still largely anti-capitalist. "Tax cuts for the rich" are actually what are needed, since the rich, or at least people who make investments, drive economic growth and job creation. High tax regimes, whether in France or New York, are characterized by slow growth and high unemployment. "Compassionate" politicians, whether Democrats or Republicans, are simply buying votes -- buying them with a draft on the future. They either don't care, or they actually still believe the socialist folly that the state drives economic growth.
