I believe that democracy is the best method of organizing a government. I think that, while we say that we have such a government now, we do not. The number of eligible voters who do not bother to vote indicate that many people do not believe that their vote really counts. Many citizens believe that the wealthy have greater influence on the actions of our government than people of modest means.

Democracy requires that voting citizens are educated and have the necessary information to make good decisions. Neither of these is in effect in the United States today. Our system of education is not meeting the needs of our citizens and our media is not providing the information needed for people to be well informed. Our democracy, as a result of these facts, in tatters.

There is the peception amongst many citizens that our elected officials are more concerned with the opinions and concerns of their campaign contributors than they are to the hopes and aspirations of the people whom they are elected to represent.

It is imperative that we create a system of public finance of candidates so that the people know that their elected officials are working in their interests. We need to fully fund our educational system and allow the free flow on information by returning the fairness doctrine to our public media. Only with these changes can we be proud that we live in a democracy.
