Governing Board Member; Paso Robles Joint Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate

Throughout my 42 years in Paso Robles I have enjoyed volunteering my time to make our city a better place to live, and I've helped our youth get better opportunities and choices in this life.

St. Rose church work:

  • I and John Busi organized the 1st St. Rose barbeque, then the 2nd and 3rd, insuring that it would become an annual event.
  • I taught Confraternity of Christine Doctrine for high school aged students.
  • I helped with St. Rose sponsored birthday parties for wards of Cuesta Cottage at the CA Youth Authority.

Public schools work:
  • I, with principal John Grey and others, promoted the Father-Son campout in the ravine below Centennial Park's swimming pool.
  • I, with teacher Harold Franklin and others, promoted hands-on learning of our nation's Civil War by taking the 6th grade students to Fort Point, San Franciso. We camped out, ate stew and corn bread, and took turns standing watch over the bay just like real soldiers.
  • For principal Glen De Graw, my wife Claire and I printed out 1400 copies of the high school monthly newsletter.
  • For Tim Alvord, I served as the voice (announcer) of Bearcat Baseball.
  • I served as a board member of our Bearcat Boosters organization.
  • Both Claire and I served as workers for the 24 Hour Relay fund raising efforts.
  • I served on the Winifred Pifer site council.
  • I and Claire individually received Founder's Day awards in 1991

Youth sports work:
  • I coached Babe Ruth Baseball and Little League Baseball for a total of 13 years. I coached in Templeton when those parents could not find anyone to help their kids.
  • I served as vice president of Babe Ruth Baseball when we organized the first All Star games to be held in Paso Robles, and Claire and I housed and fed a Fresno Bullard team of 17 players for 4 days.
  • I organized and managed an early effort in semi-pro baseball known as the Paso Robles Pirates.
  • I coached youth in basketball for St. Rose school and our city recreation department program.
  • I helped parking lot fund raising efforts at Mid State Fair and I was successful in getting a larger percentage of the gross from our city, by appealing to our City Council.

Civic work:
  • I served as a committee member of our Chamber of Commerce.
  • I served as a member of our Paso Robles Planning Commission from 1975 to 1983, a period of much activity.
  • I was elected to our Paso Robles City Council, from July 1992 to December 2000. I served our council and citizens as mayor from July 1996 to December 1998.
  • I served as a board member on our San Luis Obispo county Economic Opportunity Commission, 1992 to 1998.
  • I served as a board member on our SLO county Air Polution Control District.
  • I served on our City-School Liaison Committee, providing the seed idea for Measure D-98 which provided 40 million dollars for Paso Robles improvements and developed the safety concerns and solutions for school areas.
