Local Government

By Gail K. Lightfoot

Candidate for Councilmember; City of Arroyo Grande

Local government should be strongest
My position on local government is it it exactly where I want government to be strongest. Your local City Council and Mayor are your neighbors not career politicans living out of touch with the real world. It is at the local level that the smallest minority, the individual, has the most control. This is where you can have a direct and immediate influence on governing bodies. In fact, if we are unhappy with our small town's smallness of mind or do not like the level of control over our lives and property we can vote with out feet and go elsewhere. Cities can compete with other cities for a lack of or wise use of control over their residents. In this case, selling out or moving on is the solution for unhappy residents. If 'We the People' are involved, our community will reflect our values. 'We the People' can decide what our community needs, how to aquire and pay for it. Local taxes should remain in the locality where they are collected. All taxes should be reevaluated by each generation of taxpayers with 'Sunset' provisions.
