KEEPING THE ENVIRONMENT SAFE AND CLEAN

By Colleen Corrigan-Armstrong

Candidate for Council Member; City of Capitola

This information is provided by the candidate
In Capitola, we face the issues of cleaning up Soquel Creek, keeping our beach clean and to maintain good condition of our water supply, our sewage system and to protect our natural resources.
Regarding the environment, there are many problems that need to be addressed. Soquel Creek needs to be cleaned and maintained. There is a general plan but it is not being fully fulfilled. There needs to be ongoing and regular sewage testing. I know that there are many sewage breaks that are not being fixed. It is the responsibility of the City to ensure that our residents' needs are being meet. Right now, this is not happening and I want to change that immediately. Our beach needs to be cleaner. By not having smoking on the beach is a good step in the right direction. My family and I go down to Capitola Beach often just to pick up other people' s trash. I know there is a crew but as a citizen, I feel it is my responsibility as well. Another issue is that Capitola only has three open spaces left and I would like to keep it that way. We need to protect our wildlife more vigorously. We need to protect our water sources more energetically. We need to protect our citizens, young and old, more responsibly.

I believe that our community needs to be better educated through City-sponsored programs that will help maintain our environment now and for the future generations.
