Student Retention - Maintaining and Increasing Student Enrollment

By Donald M. Clark

Candidate for Board Member; Aromas-San Juan Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
It is imperative that we keep our student enrollment up in our school district. We have to make Aromas-San Juan School District attractive to anyone who is considering our community in which to reside. Our students must also want to remain in our school district!
When we enroll more than 100 students into our freshmen class and only graduate 50 four years later, we have a problem. We must identify the problem and analyze the issues. Parent and student involvement is key. We need to listen to the students and parents. They are our best resource in determining why they would want to leave the district. Once we identify what the issues are we must take a proactive approach and address these issues. We must then redefine the process that will lead to improved parent and student satisfaction! Families do move out of the district, but this only accounts for a small percentage of the decline in enrollment. Let's get to the bottom of this issue and correct it!
