Jim has been married to his wife Stephanie for 12 years and their three children all attend elementary school in the Union School District. Jim was born in the Bay Area and has lived in Northern California all his life, residing in the Union School District area since 1991.

Jim received his Bachelor's Degree in Marketing and Advertising from the California State University, Hayward. While in college he was a highly competitive distance runner, finishing in the top 10 in the country in the Steeplechase. Jim has had success in high technology sales, real estate sales, and marketing and is currently Marketing Director for Global Property Network, a real estate investment firm.

Volunteer and activist

Along with this successful career in high-tech sales and real estate, Jim is dedicated to improving education for all of Union School District's students. Jim has been teaching Art Vistas in USD school classrooms for four years and has served as School Site Council Vice President . Jim was also Chairman of the District's Surplus School Property Committee, working to help utilize the District's assets to help all its students.

Late in 2003, Jim Thylin joined the campaign for Measure G, a parcel tax which would have raised millions of dollars per year for the students of Union School District. Although Measure G was narrowly defeated by a few hundred votes, the awareness and commitment created in hundreds of residents and parents is a community resource that can be used to benefit our students for years to come. Jim wants to keep that momentum and build upon it to create a powerful force supporting our kids' education.

Jim is committed to bringing groups together all across the district to work cooperatively to benefit all students. Jim strongly supports the USD Education Foundation, a group of residents and parents working to raise money to fund programs that are no longer possible due to state cuts.
