State "Take-Aways"

By Barbara Spector

Candidate for Council Member; Town of Los Gatos

This information is provided by the candidate
Prevent further state "take-aways" of local funding.
Over the past years, Los Gatos has lost revenues totaling $16 million to state take-aways. In 2004, local governments, working through the League of California Cities, banded together and qualified Proposition 65, which would severely limit future take-aways, for the ballot. This effort created leverage for the local governments and brought the state to the bargaining table. As a result, the governor placed his own proposition on the ballot, Proposition 1A, which also limits take-aways and which he agreed to support. Once the electorate has voted to limit take-aways, the Town Council must be vigilant in monitoring state compliance with the voters' mandate. Los Gatos must preserve its revenues in order to restore predictability and certainty to the funding of our town-provided services.
