Conserving Energy by Conserving Water

By Ernest Solomon

Candidate for Director; Purissima Hills Water District

This information is provided by the candidate
Conserving Energy by Conserving Water I know, I know! We are all tired of reading about conserving energy. And I am sure some of you are tired of my rant about saving water. There is no drought this year...is there? Well actually, although local rainfall was near normal and local reservoirs are almost full, the Sierra snow pack is about 70% of normal, and 80% of your District's water supply comes from the Sierras. But did you know that by reducing water use, we could also reduce our consumption of energy?

According to the Association of California Water Agencies, water pumping is the "single most significant user of electricity in the state". Purissima Hills Water District has four different pressure zones and five pumping stations to deliver water to residents living at elevations ranging from 200 to 1,100 feet. Pumping that water takes energy--the District's electrical energy costs rank only after the costs of water, capital improvements, and manpower. Conserve water; save energy!

There is another reason to think conservation with regard to water use. This past year, Purissima Hills Water District used 130% of the "supply assurance" established by the Bay Area Water Users Association (an organization of 29 water agencies who purchase Hetch Hetchy water) and the San Francisco Public Utility Commission (the legal entity that provides Hetch Hetchy water).
