WHAT DO YOU THINK CAN BE DONE TO SLOW DOWN DRIVERS ON THE CITY'S MAIN STREETS?

By Paul G. Glaab

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Laguna Niguel

This information is provided by the candidate
This is a critical issue not only in our city but countywide. Drivers who drive over the posted speed limit have no reference to city boundaries, so the approach to problem must include adjacent cities. Higher accident rates among youthful drivers mandate the development of a regional approach to the resolution of this traffic issue.

As Chairman of the Laguna Niguel Transportation Commission, I have been at the forefront of City directed mitigation efforts. I have assurance that additional active, roving law enforcement patrols will be allocated to stem the numbers of speeders.

I advocate the increase use of speed read machines (passive digital speed indicators placed on the roadsides) notifying drivers of their speed, allowing the public to police themselves.

I believe it is imperative the City of Laguna Niguel work with regional cities and key organizations to educate drivers +particularly our younger citizens. Specifically, the Laguna Niguel City Council needs to take a leadership role to:

1. Partner with regional cities and schools in the development of a comprehensive driver safety program for young drivers.

2. Communicate with parents through PTA's, and other effective organizations on the importance of role modeling in the development of youthful driving habits.

3. Recruit the assistance homeowners associations, and the citizens of Laguna Niguel to aid law enforcement in the curtailment of the increasing speeding infractions.

4. Continue to monitor, and make public traffic trends; and to implement the requisite effective solutions ensuring the public's safety.

5. Annually review all City-wide traffic regulations and provide the necessary revisions.
