Jerry Smith was elected Mayor of the City of Seaside by a wide margin in November of 1998. He was unopposed for re-election in 2000 and 2002 and is currently serving his third term as Mayor. During his tenure as Mayor, violent crime has been reduced by 90%. He has balanced six consecutive city budgets with no layoffs and no tax increases.

Mayor Smith is a Monterey County native. His family has lived her since 1889. He has been married to his wife, Byrl, for over 35 years. Jerry attended Monterey Peninsula College, majoring in Data Processing and Accounting. After college, Jerry was inducted into the United States Army, serving in Vietnam with the 4th Infantry Division and completing his service as a Sergeant in the 5th Division Military Police Company.

Returning home to Seaside, Mayor Smith worked as a Night Auditor /Manager in the hotel industry and later joined United California Bank as a Loan Officer. He then worked in retail auto sales until beginning his career as a Peace Officer with the California Department of Corrections. Jerry was promoted to Sergeant in 1987 and Lieutenant in 1990. He now serves as the Community Resources Manager and Public Information Officer, working closely with local cities and Monterey County.

In addition to his duties as the Mayor of Seaside, Jerry serves as the Chairman of the Fort Ord Reuse Authority and the Local Agency Formation Commission. Jerry is deeply involved in the community and serves as a board member or volunteer for several community service organizations, including the Hospice Foundation, Special Olympics, United Way, Restorative Justice Commission, and MORE Health, among others.

Mayor Smith was honored as the 2001 Public Official of the Year by the Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, and was elected to the Monterey Peninsula College Hall of Fame.
