Water is obviously essential to our lives, so it's important to keep it pure and in plentiful supply. While I don't consider myself either for or against development, it is important to protect the water supplies that we have and try to develop new sources.

The present Marina groundwater supply is close to the ocean and is unfortunately threatened by possible seawater intrusion. Furthermore, the District gets most of its water from a part of the aquifer (the deep zone, 900-1200 feet deep) that is poorly understood by the hydrologists.

The water for the former Fort Ord comes from shallower wells further inland, and is endangered by both seawater and toxic chemicals from a now closed dump on the former Fort Ord. The District's water presently meets all drinking water quality standards, but additional volume being pumped could lead to a reduction in quality unless new sources are found.

At the present time the customers of the Water District who reside on the former Fort Ord, are not directly represented on the District's Board of directors. I will do everything I can as a director to change this situation. All users must have the right to elect the directors that serve them.

So the primary task the District faces is to protect the water we have, and look for alternate sources. Those sources may be from reworking old wells, drilling new wells or developing a large scale desalination plant. Each of these potential solutions is complex from both an engineering and economic standpoint. Reaching the right solution will not be easy, and will take time and careful consideration. I am willing to devote the time and effort needed to reach the right solutions to these problems.
