By Bruce J. Obbink

Candidate for Councilmember; City of Pacific Grove

This information is provided by the candidate
Bruce Obbink has been active in Pacific Grove public affairs since his retirement in 1998, and in addition to serving as a Planning Commissioner; is also a member of PG's Special Subcommittee on Secondary and Illegal Housing; member of the Subcommittee on Archaeological Review; and chairman of the Golf Course Advisory Committee. Obbink has been a diligent attendee of all City Council meetings over the past three years, and has audited meetings of all the various city committees.

"Being involved in Pacific Grove issues," Obbink said, "is a logical extension of over three decades as a Chief Executive Officer, where I was active in local, state and national politics, devoting most of my energy to financial management, charitable work and crisis control. I believe I can put this experience to work on behalf of the citizens of Pacific Grove."

A graduate of Missouri State University, Obbink served six years as a Naval Aviator in the Pacific. As Chief Executive Officer of the California Table Grape Commission, he worked to quadruple demand for California table grapes worldwide on behalf of the state's fresh grape farmers. During this period, he attended Harvard Business School continuing education programs, and served as a member of the U. S. Department of Agriculture Trade Policy Advisory Committee.

Bruce is a member of the Friends of the Pacific Grove Library; the Pacific Grove Museum Association; the Pacific Grove Heritage Society; the Cypress MG Car Club; and Saint Mary's Episcopal Church. He is a contributor to the Pacific Grove Rotary project supporting performing arts in Pacific Grove.

"I look forward to the opportunity over the next few months to discuss with residents the issues facing the city," Obbink said. "I believe I can bring to local government a focus on fiscal integrity while being ever mindful of the unique qualities of Pacific Grove."

Bruce and Judy Obbink have been married 45 years, and have two daughters and one grandson. They have been Pacific Grove homeowners since 1981.
