Jeff Haferman Biography

Dr. Jeff Haferman was born on July 19, 1964. Raised in Prior Lake, Minnesota, he helped his parents with their business and graduated from public high school in 1982 while serving as Student Council President.

Jeff earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Math and Computer Science from the University of Chicago, followed by a Masters and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Iowa in 1995. He was awarded a prestigious NASA Global Change Fellowship from 1993-1995, and worked at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (Greenbelt, Maryland) in 1995-1996.

Jeff has a strong financial background, having worked at The University of Chicago Office of Information Systems Planning (part of the Budget Office) and for O'Conner and Associates at the Chicago Board of Trade (1986-1989).

Jeff and his wife Joyce have lived in Monterey since 1997, where he works for the United States Navy at Fleet Numerical, serving as chair of a tri-agency (NOAA/Air Force/Navy) research panel.

An active volunteer, from 1998-2002, Jeff served the community as Vice-President of the Old Town Neighborhood Association, where he led efforts to draft the Old Town Neighborhood Area Plan, which describes the neighborhood vision of Old Town over the next decade.

Jeff believes his experiences living and working all over the country will allow him to bring a broad "big picture" perspective to the Monterey City Council. His background in finance and engineering are important assets to bring to the Council, and -- together with his experience in environmental affairs (at NASA) -- represent an unusual blend of skills that are especially important to maintaining the unique character of Monterey and meeting the challenge of the city's fiscal crisis.

He has served as a voice of reason and community advocate over the last several years, helping many of his friends and neighbors in appearances before the City Council, Planning Commission, Historic Preservation Commission, and Architectural Review Committee. He knows the City Staff well, and can work in cooperation with the current council and commissions.
