Economic Strength for Eureka

Councilmember Chris Kerrigan has and will continue to be a strong and consistent proponent of job creation, economic development and support for local businesses. Councilmember Kerrigan understands that working families in Eureka need good jobs NOW. Councilmember Kerrigan has also worked to better our transportation infrastructure to lower the costs of doing business in Eureka, improving our highways and expanding local air service.
  • As a member of the Eureka City Council, Councilmemeber Kerrigan helped create Eureka's first strategic plan for economic development. He has consistently worked to stimulate the local economy and diversify Eureka's employment opportunities, while retaining he city's unique character and beauty.
  • As Chair of the Redwood Region Economic Development Commission, he was instrumental in the agency's investment of more than $6 million in fuding for local businesses that saved and created hundreds of jobs in our community.
  • Councilmember Kerrigan is the only candidate to be endorsed by local labor unions representing local workers, earning the formal support of the Central Labor Council of Humboldt and Del Norte Counties, the Building and Construction Trades Council of Humboldt and Del Norte Counties, Operating Engineers Local 3, and Carpenters Local 751. These endorsements demonstrate that working families support Councilmember Kerrigan as he continues to advocate for living wage jobs for all of Eureka's residents.
  • Councilmember Kerrigan has worked to revitalize Eureka's waterfront, including development of the Boardwalk and the new Fisherman's Work Area. He has also supported downtown and neighborhood redevelopment and the construction of the city's Multiple Assistance Center, creating scores of jobs for local construction workers. Through Councilmember Kerrigan's collaboration on the Eureka City Council, storefront vacancy rates have been reduced to a fourteen-year low, proving business in growing in Eureka, creating jobs along the way.
  • Councilmember teamed with county officials to fight for improvements to Buckhorn Summit. He was also key in leveraging matching funds from both the Redwood Region Economic Development Commission and the City of Eureka to gain expanded air service to Los Angeles. He also helped establish Eureka's Free Trade Zone to provide tax relief for local businesses.
  • Councilmember Kerrigan believes economic development and smart growth go hand in hand. That is why he advocates strongly for urban development and building more critically needed affordable housing within the city. Councilmember Kerrigan understands that affordable housing is critical for Eureka's working families. That is why he worked to raise the amount loaned by the city's first time homebuyer program to help keep pace with rising property values.
