My Vision & Goals as Board Member

By Lucia Flores-De La O

Candidate for Trustee; Clovis Unified School District; Trustee Area 5

This information is provided by the candidate
Better Communication with parents and board
My vision is to see all students properly prepared for the future and support them in their pursuit of their dreams. By being part of the board, I can participate in that process and at the same time represent the families of Clovis Unified School District.

I believe with a sound foundation from home to pre-school, all the way through High School a student will leave prepared for what awaits them. It can be a job, continuing their education and even raising a family. But first of all our students should have the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue their dreams. Vocational training is an excellent idea but not limited only to the trade but incorporating it into the curriculum, so when students finish High School they will be prepared to continue college and at the same time a vocational career.

I feel better communication with parents is essential so opportunities are not missed. Clovis Unified has many programs that help a student succeed and participate in leadership roles. I have found some parents that are not aware of these programs. I always communicate to parents all the possibilities available for their children.

Let's Listen, it takes a few minutes to do so. The notion that parents fear approaching the district must be dispelled. Administrators must assure parents feel they can come to the school and it's alright to voice their concerns. The bottom line parents are entrusting us with their children and they have the right to make sure their child is progressing as needed. We(parents) love our children and if there is a concern let's make sure we do not lose a child because a parent was not able to get answers. Asking questions should not be scary and teachers should be aware of the differences of their student's background. We are a diverse community, but are best similarity is we all want a good education for our children. Parents must know that they are their childrens' first teacher and their participation with their child makes a difference.

I believe a real effort by board members in being available to their constituents is necessary. It can be a simple process such as visiting a parent meeting, at a carnival, a rally, etc.. This way parents can feel they have support from the district. Just their presence from time to time to touch basis and see how things are going. Reaching out to parents so they can be informed.

Lastly, respect with all that we have contact in our schools either parents, students, staff and the community. I am proud of all the people involved that make our schools a safe environment for study and growth. From the custodians, to the bus drivers, to our teachers and administrators. A goal I see is maintaing our quality during times of cutbacks and working together for the common goal. As seen when measure A passed back in March. I am proud of our schools, as many parents are. We are so fortunate to belong to a district that expects high standards from students and teachers.

I respectfully ask for your vote on November 2, 2004, so I can be your VOICE.
