TRAFFIC

By David Yuers

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Walnut Creek

Improving The Flow Of Traffic And Reducing Transportation Gridlock
Traffic congestion, whether it is experienced on Treat Boulevard, North Main or Oak Grove Road is due to many factors. Increased population density, availability of parking and the political unwillingness to widen our roadways and increase the number of lanes available - especially on Ygnacio Valley Road - are only a FEW of the reasons why our traffic backs up in the morning and evening.

My main point of contention with the incumbents is that they have all signed on to SHAPING OUR FUTURE. This scheme -billed as "Smart Growth" - will erode the city's legitimate right to govern itself: including the arena of TRAFFIC.

The majority of the congestion we experience results from commuters from other cities traveling through Walnut Creek. It is simply a fact that SHAPING OUR FUTURE will have their interests at heart, and not those of the residents of Walnut Creek.

We cannot solve the problems of traffic if the county and state or different districts obtain the authority that the residents of Walnut Creek elect city councilmembers to retain.

"Smart Growth" will INCREASE population density downtown (based on the planning I've seen) for example. If Walnut Creek attempts to widen Ygnacio Valley Road and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) or the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) or some other entity not duly elected by the citizens of Walnut Creek decides to halt the expansion - it will have that power.

I want to speed up the traffic, reduce the congestion, and limit the time of our commutes. Join me in this endeavor by voting for 'Yuers' Truly for Walnut Creek City Council.
