The biggest challenges currently facing the Castro Valley Sanitary District Board include the following: maintaining the system infrastructure; ensuring the on-time and on-budget completion of the wastewater treatment plant upgrade; achieving a 75% diversion rate for solid waste; and maintaining the rates at reasonable levels.

When elected I will meet these challenges by assisting the Board in utilizing the results of the forthcoming Master Plan to proactively plan for the future of the District's infrastructure. Planning correctly and comprehensively will provide District ratepayers with the best service at the lowest rates for years to come.

I will direct staff to assure the timely and on-budget completion of the wastewater treatment plant upgrade by continuing the assignment of GM Roland Williams to this task. The expert oversight of the Board's Construction Committee (for which I would seek to be included) will also aid in successfully completing this project.

I will strive to achieve a 75% waste diversion rate by improving school, business, and youth sport activities recycling efforts. The key to recycling is to make it as easy as possible. This includes instruction to let people know it's available and how to do it. Convenient placement of recycling containers in public venues is also key to these efforts.

I will insist on competitive negotiations with potential collection providers for the next contract in order to provide the best service at the lowest rates.

I will work to maintain the bulky waste and appliance pickup option; strengthen the sewer lateral replacement program; implement a periodic e-waste collection program; and re-implement the District-wide garage sale.

I have a strong desire to serve our community. I am committed to Castro Valley and to a strong quality of life for all who live and work here.
