Tom Pico - Democrat and Mayor, City of Pleasanton, California

Pleasanton Mayor Tom Pico has a passion for public service, which grew out of Tom's own roots. Tom is the grandson of Portuguese immigrants who moved to Hawaii to work in the pineapple and sugar cane fields. Tom's father was orphaned at 9, gained a 6th grade education, went to work in the fields at 13, then raised his family in Antioch, California where he and Tom's mother worked in the paper mill.

The first in his family to graduate from college, Tom was the first son to make a living using tools other than a short-handled hoe. He is a graduate of Diablo Valley College, San Francisco State University, Golden Gate University (MBA in Taxation), and the U.S. Army Infantry Officer Candidate School.

Tom was called to duty in 1966 and served as an Army Finance and Accounting officer until his discharge in 1969. He has worked for the U.S. General Accounting Office, Deloitte and Touche, and in private industry as a Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Finance. A Certified Public Accountant, he is currently a small business owner, with a private tax practice.

Tom has been active in political and community affairs for most of his life. He was elected to the Pleasanton City Council in 1992, served two terms, and then was elected Mayor in 2000, and again in 2002. During his City Council and Mayoral tenures, Tom has combined his financial expertise with the abilities to listen, build consensus and act in the best interest of the community. As a result, Pleasanton enjoys award-winning public safety services, solid financial reserves, and intelligently managed growth, which preserves open space and respects the environment.

Tom is married to Karen Pico, who is Executive Director of a non-profit child abuse prevention agency. They have a blended family of four adult children, and two grandsons. To relax, they enjoy traveling in their motor home, backpacking, and soaking in hot springs. BACKGROUND DATA
