William P. Meyers (Bill) was born in 1955 at the Camp Lejeune Marine Corp base in North Carolina. His family moved in 1960 to Jacksonville, Florida, where his father attended college and then taught in public and private high schools. Bill graduated from The Bolles School in 1972 and then attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he obtained a B.A. in Political Science and a strong background in computers and applied math. Bill paid his way through college with scholarships and work as a lifeguard and factory worker.

Unable to stomach working for corrupt Democratic or Republican politicians, Bill instead worked as a paralegal and computer expert to support himself while engaging in grass-roots community organizing. In 1987 he joined the Industrial Workers of the World, a labor union, and in 1988 began working with Earth First! He started a book publishing company, III Publishing, in 1988.

Bill moved to San Diego, California in 1987. He married Jan Edwards in 1991 and moved to San Francisco. Jan and Bill settled in Mendocino County in 1994. In 1998 he stopped publishing books because decline of independent bookstores, but set up a business as a freelance technical writer and indexer. In 1999 he co-founded the Redwood Coast Alliance for Demcracy with Jan Edwards and was appointed to the Point Arena School Board. In 2000 he campaigned for Ralph Nader and in 2001 joined the Green Party. When his appointed position expired he was elected to the school board in 2001. In 2002 the California Green Party elected him to be one of its representatives on the national committee of the Green Party of the United States. In 2003 and 2004 the school board elected him as its president.
