I was born in Baltimore, Maryland where I attended public schools and then Johns Hopkins University for about a year. From the age of 14 I worked throughout my school years in my uncle's slaughter house as a hog butcher for about 20 hours a week.

At age 18 I joined the U.S. Navy and visited San Francisco (Treasure Island) while serving on the Battleship Iowa. Ultimately I graduated from University of Colorado (Boulder) with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. And then worked as a solar astronomer for the High Altitude Observatory of National Center for Atmospheric Research at observatories in Colorado, New Mexico and Hawaii -- 30 years in all.

Thereafter I spent ten years as an engineer with Veterans Administration at six different hospitals, including some of the largest then in the VA system (West Haven, Boston, Cleveland, advancing to the position of Chief Engineer.

In 1988 my wife and I moved to California to be closer to some of our children and two grandkids and was employed as Chief of Operations & Maintenance for U.S. Army at Presidio of San Francisco (5 years) and then for the National Park Service (5 years) until my retirement in 1999.

Presently I've committed a major portion of my time as a volunteer in many aspects of the Democratic Party including voter registration and get-out-the-vote campaigns.

Also I am a part-time student at Fromm Institute for Lifelong Learning at University of San Francisc studying History, Politics, Literature, Ethics, Religion, etc., with about 1500 other retirees.

I regularly "do" road and trail races including 10Ks, the Bay-to-Breakers (15 year stretch) and the past four Honolulu Marathons -- always as a "FINISHER" -- near the end of the pack.
