Shall domestic partners be allowed to register in the City, even if they live or work outside the City, and shall the City Employees' Retirement System treat domestic partners as spouses?

Summary:
Measure D is a Charter amendment that would allow any two persons who meet the requirements for domestic partnership to register their partnership in the City, even if they do not live or work in the City. Proposition D also would allow the Board of Supervisors to amend the domestic partnership law - without voter approval - to:

  • treat domestic partners registered outside the City in the same way the City treats couples who are married outside the City;

  • give domestic partners the legal rights given to spouses, as may be permitted by future changes in state and federal law.

In addition, under the City Employees' Retirement System, domestic partners would be treated the same as spouses.

Meaning of Voting Yes/No
A YES vote of this measure means:
If you vote "yes," you want to make these changes to the City's domestic partnership law and Employees' Retirement System.

A NO vote of this measure means:
If you vote "no," you do not want to make these changes.
