Will I be hard on crime?

By Edward J. "Ed" Peckham

Candidate for Superior Court Judge; County of San Diego; Office 24

This information is provided by the candidate
Based upon my experience I will impose the most appropriate sentence.
Because I am a private practitioner, if I choose to practice criminal law, I can only do criminal defense. Because I have been a criminal defense lawyer, some may wonder if I will be easy on crime if elected to the bench. Judges are elected to the bench because of their experience. I bring to the bench years of experience that includes criminal defense. There is no better person to truly evaluate the criminal case than the person who has spent years dealing with criminals. I know every excuse, every defense, every reason used to mollify, mitigate or minimize criminal conduct. No one will pull the wool over my eyes. Nor have I become hardened to the conduct of the criminal. I still am touched by the person anguish of victims and feel that they should receive compensation for their injuries.

Ultimately, it is the law which is hard on crime. The judge has some discretion to impose a lighter sentence, but for the most part, he has a small range of options. I believe that our streets are becoming more dangerous. I believe that criminals especially the street gangs are becoming more violent and indiscriminant in their violence. I believe that people, who hurt people, especially if they use a gun, should be punished severely.
