Herb believes that labels don't count. Labels, whether they be "liberal" or "conservative," "left wing" or "right wing," or even "Democratic" or "Republican," tend to detract from the real issues. The important question is what is in the best interest of the people of the city, the county, the state, the nation, and the world. He has in the past and is willing in the future to stand up for principles even if that stand conflicts with party orthodoxy.

He'll insist on effective campaign finance reform. Our political system is contaminated by special interest money. We need to make all our legislators responsible to the voters, not to their campaign contributors. We, the voters, need to fund political campaigns directly; in the long run we'll save money and gain a more responsive, effective government. This is the one reform that makes all other reforms possible.
