Smart Voter Political Philosophy for John B. Gostovich

Candidate for
County Board of Supervisors; County of Santa Barbara; Supervisorial District 1

This information is provided by the candidate

For far too long we've settled for too little from our elected officials and the County departments they oversee...

  • too little scrutiny and accountability;
  • too little consistency and fairness;
  • too little meaningful public participation; and
  • virtually no progress on housing, the environment, public safety, fire prevention, energy conservation and renewables, economic development, or successful mass transit

Santa Barbara County government doesn't match its rhetoric with action. Despite endless hearings, meetings, plans and new ordinances, we continue to live in a County with no comprehensive strategy for job creation, public safety, environmental progress, fire prevention, energy conservation, mass transportation, or housing.

Our County government tries to address every challenge with new rules and regulations. This is a recipe for widespread distrust and cynicism. North County residents are working to split the County. The Third, District Supervisor was nearly recalled. The Santa Ynez Community Plan has been abandoned. County housing initiatives are met with solid opposition as neighborhood residents and planners talk past each other.

The system's simply not good enough. We can't afford more of the same.

With your support, we can bring predictability, fairness, consistency, and openness to County government.

With your support, we can achieve a cleaner environment and a stronger economy. We can have greater safety in our homes and businesses. We can have effective fire prevention and disaster preparedness. We can build a better, more attractive public transit system. We can build affordable housing for families and workers in locations that make sense. We can enjoy a county workforce which delivers customer service second to none.
