Liquified Natural Gas Facility

By Glen Clifford "Bud" Rogers, II

Candidate for Supervisor; County of Humboldt; Supervisorial District 2

If there is an earthquake--the likes of which visit our area every 10,000 years or so--the devastation will be great enough without adding to it the giant firestorm that results from the ignition of a gas cloud resulting from a rupture in an LNG storage tank.
No. This is the worst idea I have heard for "economic development." It is a typical example of how corporations exploit the resources of a community, state or country and externalize the costs. The costs of this LNG facility for Humboldt Bay will be enormously burdensome. This includes the ecological damage of dredging the bay and harbor, the psychological anxiety for the inhabitants and visitors to Eureka and environs, the industrialization of the aesthetics of Eureka, unknown security infrastructure and its affect on the mental atmosphere of Humboldt County, and the possibility of instant death for all life in Eureka and environs.

Here we are, waiting for the deca-millenial 9.2 earthquake, and at the same time, as though they came from another planet, here comes Calpine wanting to store enough explosive material to vaporize Eureka and everyone in it. If there is an earthquake--the likes of which visit our area every 10,000 years or so--the devastation will be great enough without adding to it the giant firestorm that results from the ignition of a gas cloud resulting from a rupture in an LNG storage tank. There are much better ways to create jobs and save the county money. The county spends around 60k on electricity for the courthouse and jail--a MONTH! Electric rates will rise astronomically. The Enron-istas are still out there! What do we do? More on this later.
